Amaury “King Klavé” Acosta’s debut solo album released on September 2nd, 2022 made it to NPR Music’s New Music Friday and Jazz Night in America. The album features virtuoso collaborations with Pino Palladino, Pedrito Martinez, DJ Harrison, and Marcus Machado; as well as the vocal stylings of Jake Sherman and J. Hoard and mixed by Paul Wilson aka Bae Bro. The cover art is by Cuban artist Luis Cruz Azaceta.
Born in New York to Cuban parents, King Klavé is an electronic music composer, drummer, and producer of wild concepts of art who wants to push Cuban music into the future and innovate. “Cuban culture has been stigmatized with the past”, he says “and this is my way of making it relevant to the now.”
King Klavé is a 17-song genre-bending synthesis of Afro-Cuban traditional rhythms, Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, and funk. After 10 years in the making, it will be released on all streaming platforms and on vinyl via his Band camp and commercially distributed by Mother Tongue Distribution. It covers many topics, including mental health reassurance, overcoming self-doubt, the duality of being Cuban-American and how that informs him as an artist, the vulnerabilities of being an independent artist, and a lot of hidden influences that are clued in for the listener. This record is about finding the strength to persevere, hence the song “Rezo” (prayer) with Pedrito Martinez that brings a moment of reflection, of being one with the music as a closing to the album.
